Hello Everyone:

By now each chapter has received a roll of plastic Go Green for Schools cell phone recycling bags and you are probably wondering what are the next steps. As most of you may remember we have been persuing a company wide cell phone recycling program for some time and I am happy to say it has finally come to fruition. This program will not only be good for the environment but it is a great opportunity for Qwest Pioneer chapters to raise money for education initiatives. This program will be discussed in more detail during the next region call but I wanted to provide you with a quick overview in advance.

Background

Did you know that less than 3 percent of all Americans recycle their cell phones? But, 90 percent reported they would recycle their cell phones if there was an easy way to do it?

Go Green for Schools is a new and innovative cell phone recycling initiative brought to you by Qwest. By recycling your cell phone with Qwest, you keep unused cell phones out of landfills and reduce green house gas emissions. This recycling program also helps raise money for public school districts and preK-12 educational initiatives.

This program is a company wide initiative with bags being distributed at all retail locations, select local market events and select sponsored activities. All funds raised through the effort will be used to support education initiatives but Pioneers will only be able to designate the use of funds raised through their distribution efforts.

How it Works:

Each chapter has received 1 roll containing 200 postage paid recycling envelopes coded for their chapter. (2 additional rolls will be sent to each chapter in the upcoming weeks)  Simply provide the bags to individuals who have idle cell phones they would like to donate. The individual who wants to donate the phone puts the cell phone(s) in the plastic bag, seals it and drops it in the mail box. The postage for shipping the phone is prepaid and all funds raised through the recycling of the phones will be available for use by the chapter to support  educational initiatives (i.e. purchasing Readers for Life books, items for school supply drives or supplies for electronic maps). The region will provide updates to the chapters on an ongoing basis (probably quarterly) with updates as to how much money each group has raised. (Please keep in mind that different phones will recive different values. Older phones may not earn money for the chapter, the only benefit may be knowing that it was responsibly recycled and not dumped into a landfill. Other phones may garner anwhere from $1 to $30 each)Once chapters begin to accumulate funds they will be provided with the procedure on how to request the funds for their desired projects.

Excerpts from the FAQ

    1. What is Go Green for Schools?

Go Green for Schools is a new and innovative cell phone recycling initiative brought to you by Qwest. By recycling your cell phone with Qwest, you keep unused cell phones out of landfills and reduce green house gas emissions. This recycling program also helps raise money for public school districts and preK-12 educational initiatives.

2.      What happens with my phone? Where does it go?

Go Green for Schools collects used cell phones and accessories, regardless of service provider, make, model or technology. Collected cell phones are refurbished or recycled. The refurbished phones are sold by our recycling partner and proceeds are distributed to designated public school districts and educational initiatives. Older, unsalvageable phones are disposed of in an environmentally sound way through an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-certified salvage company.

4.      Why should I choose to donate my phone to Go Green for Schools?

A recent survey revealed that only 2.3 percent of Americans recycle their cell phones but that 90 percent of Americans would recycle their cell phones if there was an easy way to do it. Go Green for Schools is an easy way for consumers to recycle their cell phones at no cost to them. In addition to keeping the environment clean, all money raised through this recycling program will be used to support preK-12 educational initiatives. When customers donate their cell phones to Go Green for Schools they can be confident that their phones will be recycled or refurbished properly, and proceeds will be used to generate funds for education.

5.      Can I donate my phone's accessories?

Accessories such as a phone charger, headset and spare batteries are welcomed. Although accessories will not raise additional funds for you organization you have the satisfaction of knowing they will be responsibly recycled.

6.      What if I don't have the charger and other accessories for my phone?

You can still donate your cell phone and it will help raise funds for Go Green for Schools.

11.     What if my phone is broken?

You can still donate your wireless phone even if it is broken. If it is not salvageable, the parts will be recycled and used to generate funds for area public school districts and preK-12 educational initiatives.

13.     What happens to the personal information on the wireless phones?

Qwest encourages everyone who plans to give a phone to Go Green for Schools to erase any personal data on the phone before donating it. You may download instructions to clear personal information using the cell phone data eraser at www.qwest.com/gogreenforschools. If you do not get the opportunity to erase your phone in advance don’t worry, as part of the refurbishing process, our recycling vendor scrubs the phone of all personal data prior to distributing it for re-use.

15.     Will I receive a tax receipt for this donation?

No. Cell phones and related accessories contributed to Go Green for Schools are not tax deductible.
