Award-Winning Qwest Pioneers Recognized _______________________________________________________________________________ The Qwest Pioneers – winners of the 2008 Chairman’s Award – were recognized nationally for brightening people's lives in a variety of ways. _______________________________________________________________________________ (Mar. 13, 2009) – Six awards for community-service excellence put the Qwest Pioneers in the national spotlight at the TelecomPioneers Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The nonprofit volunteer organization, made up of Qwest employees and retirees, won top awards for project excellence, life enrichment and a Chairman’s Award. The Qwest Pioneers won the award for the implementation of “Spring into Action,” a 2008 volunteer engagement program. This year, the winning project was awarded for: * Collaboration with the sponsor company, Qwest; * Impact on volunteer engagement; * Support of the company’s and Pioneer goals and objectives, and; * Excellence in the advancement and promotion of the Pioneers and Pioneer programs. Programs were developed and implemented by all 14 of Qwest’s chapters to give current employees encouragement, resources and tools to enable them to volunteer more easily with initiatives such as Take Your Children to Work Day incorporating Project Connect, JA in a Day activities, and the Nebraska Children’s Groundwater Festival. The “Spring into Action,” program was highlighted as a premier top-down effort; a shining example of a sponsor company and Pioneers working together to benefit the community. Among the Pioneers Awards were: * Readers for Life – A Qwest program to help teachers and reading specialists obtain supplemental books for students who struggle with their reading skills. * Pioneers Support for Our American Heroes – Various programs that engage employees and community partners in recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans, military members and their families. * Birthday in a Bag – All the fixings for a child’s memorable birthday are assembled – including cake mix, frosting, balloons, paper plates and cups, and small gifts. * Excellence in Volunteer Implementation – This award was given to the Nebraska Pioneers for their involvement with Take Your Child to Work day in 2008. * Go Green for Schools – A Qwest 14-state project to support cell phone recycling. With Go Green for Schools, the Qwest Pioneers successfully processed nearly 2,000 phones -- 75 percent of them recycled and 25 percent fully refurbished for reuse.
